THE PRIVATE COMPANY SpaceX is now booking flight slots for the Falcon 9 Heavy, scheduled for its first flight in 2012. Intended to carry satellites or unmanned interplanetary spacecraft, the rocket is designed to put as much as 53,000 kilo- grams into orbit, making it second only to the Apollo-era Saturn V in payload capacity.
