What are the 50 Smartest Companies? FAQ

What is MIT Technology Review’s list of the 50 Smartest Companies?

This is a list put together each year by the magazine’s editors to highlight companies that have displayed an especially impressive combination of technological leadership and business acumen over the past year. It is not based on quantitative measures such as patents or R&D spending.

Are both private and public companies included on the list?

Yes.

Can the same company be on the list in more than one year?

Yes, and many are.

What is the time frame for choosing the list?

The editors review companies throughout the year; however, the final list is not chosen until May.

How does the nomination process work?

There is no formal entry process or submission form required for nominations. If you would like to suggest a company, please send an e-mail to pitches@technologyreview.com explaining why the company deserves consideration.

When should I send such a pitch?

Anytime.

What is the deadline?

There is none. We always want to hear about interesting companies.
